"Fotografar e manipular imagens é pensar na profundidade das relações humanas". Foi com esse pensamento que em 2015 iniciei o restauro e a edicão de negativos estereográficos em chapa de vidro feitos por meu pai entre 1929 e 1944. O meu intuito ao fazer esse trabalho foi provocar uma viagem no tempo e na memória dos meus irmãos mais velhos, hoje na casa dos 90 anos.
O acesso ao passado via fotografia e memória, visto que, em alguma medida, depende de uma construção narrativa, sempre traz consigo uma dimensão incorporadora de ficção e surrealismo.
Assim, à partir de registros de família, feitos mais de duas décadas antes do meu nascimento, criei todo um universo, baseada nas historias vividas por meus 4 irmãos mais velhos que me foram contadas ao longo de minha infância, que criaram em mim um forte laço de ancestralidade e pertencimento.
Fazendo o uso das ferramentas e dos dispositivos de nosso tempo, transformei essas imagens realizadas há quase 100 anos em diários visuais poéticos de uma vivência que gostaria de ter tido, propiciando assim uma auto-cura pela fotografia e diminuindo a saudade que sinto, de um tempo que não vivi. _____________________________________________

Como Natalie Cole que fazendo uso da tecnologia lança o álbum “Unforgettable With Love“ utilizando uma nova técnica que a permitiu regravar duetos de velhos registros musicais com o pai já falecido. Eu, retomo os negativos em vidro de fotografias estereoscópicas dos meus irmãos, feitas por meu pai entre 1929 e 1944, e faço uma releitura dessas imagens, criando um vai e vem entre tempos e espaços com o intuito de criar uma possibilidade de materialização da saudade que sinto, de um tempo que não vivi.

100 years of family photography are the basis of the work of Maria Cecilia de São Thiago, on display at Estúdio 41.
In “Unforgettable”, the artist uses nearly a century of photographs to reconstruct family memories, transforming images into poetic visual diaries.
From Tuesday, March 8th, Estúdio 41 will host the Unforgettable exhibition, with works by the photographer Maria Cecilia de São Thiago. "To photograph and manipulate images is to think about the depth of human relationships", defines Cecília. It was with this thought in mind that, in 2015, the artist began the restoration and editing of stereographic glass plate negatives made by her father between 1929 and 1944, with the intention of provoking a journey in time and in the memory of his older brothers, who are now around 90 years old.
Since access to the past through photographs depends not only on memory, but also on a narrative construction, Maria Cecilia always brings with her an incorporating dimension of fiction and surrealism. The artist created a universe from family records and the stories that were told to her throughout her childhood, starring her father and her 4 older brothers, more than two decades before her birth. There are almost 100 years of photography that portray the memories of their families and create a bond of ancestry and belonging.
Making use of current tools and devices, the artist transforms these images captured almost a century ago into poetic visual diaries of an experience she would have liked to have, thus providing a self-cure through photography and diminishing the nostalgia she always had for things she didn't knew.
The works reflect the artist's vision of the little brothers. Like In Search of Lost Time, by Marcel Proust, she tries to make the absent present, in an attempt to materialize the longing for an unlived time. The images manage to exemplify in a very precise way the idea that photographic art is also a construction of the past, without the need for a discursive element.
The work refers to a popular ideology, as family albums are very present elements in our culture, building history and memory. "I take the glass negatives of stereoscopic photographs of my brothers, made by my father between 1929 and 1944, and I reread these images, creating a back and forth between times and spaces, with the aim of creating a possibility of materializing the miss of a time I didn't live", comments the artist Maria Cecilia de São Thiago, about Unforgettable, also recorded in a photo book.
For Diógenes Moura, curator of the exhibition, "Maria Cecília works with memory, with a photograph that tells a very personal story, being, at the same time, a valuable historical record. In an insistent process of creation and post-production, she invents another story: it joins the past and the present as a movie of her own life".
The first study for this series, called “Eu Sei, Sim, Onde Ela Mora”, in reference to a song composed by her father, received first place for Fotolivros in the Px3 competition and was exhibited in Paris in July 2021. For the exhibition at Estúdio 41, copies of the photobook Unforgettable will be available for sale.

Born in São Paulo, Maria Cecilia de São Thiago is a graphic designer, jewelry designer and photographer. She lived 6 years in Munich, Germany and her work has a strong influence from German-speaking artists. Her works have lately been exhibited in Paris, Caen, Florence, Rome and Budapest, where she has received outstanding awards.
